As a proud PCORnet® Clinical Research Network, we are committed to fulfilling PCORI’s mission of engaging communities to drive better, faster research. We strongly encourage all studies using INSIGHT data to incorporate a community engagement plan which incorporates diverse communities at on phases of the research.
Why is engagement important for research?

By engaging patients and other communities throughout the research lifecycle, scientists are better able to conduct equitable research and address the needs of the communities; thus increasing their scientific rigor and merit. Ultimately, the inclusion of diverse people, communities, and perspectives help to shape new technologies, therapies, care models, and policies which drive social change.

How does INSIGHT support community-engaged research?

INSIGHT provides several engagement opportunities to facilitate collaboration between researchers, patients, caregivers, and other key communities in order to advance patient-centered research.​

INSIGHT utilizes the Accelerator Teams model as the foundation of our network’s engagement infrastructure. Accelerators Teams are topic-specific groups which foster a co-learning collaborative between researchers and communities. Each Accelerator includes patients, citizen scientists, advocates, clinicians, researchers, funders, and health care industry leaders who work together to generate new research ideas, questions, approaches, and projects. INSIGHT has 10 years of experience launching Accelerator Teams with participation from diverse communities. Topics-specific Accelerator Teams have included some of the following healthcare conditions: cancer, diabetes/kidney disease, Alzheimer's/Dementia, and congestive heart failure.

The Accelerator Steering Committee (ASC) is a multi-community committee which seeks to integrate and embed patients and communities into every dimension of the INSIGHT operations. The ASC aims to foster co-learning amongst all INSIGHT communities by providing critical feedback on INSIGHT activities. The ASC is composed of communities participating in all engagement levels and oversees the activities of the research engagement sessions, individual accelerators, and the training and certifications of new communities.

INSIGHT Engagement Leads provide complimentary consultations to assist research teams with incorporating a patient or community engagement plan into their study design, evaluation plan, and/or dissemination plan.
